The Wollemi Pine is one of the rarest plant species on Earth, previously thought to be extinct 50-100 million years ago. 39 specimens were discovered in 1994 at the bottom of a gorge in New South Wales, Australia. Tree Seeds
how do You Get seeds from a tree such as a Dogwood or other tree that has no fruit or propeller seeds?

I have several trees and i want to plant more to make our yard look nicer, help the enviroment and all that. I like to raise the trees From Seeds, but so far all i have been able to raise are maple, red maple, chinese red maple, because they have the seeds that are easy to spot and i know where to look for the seeds. But i want to plant some other types like Dogwood (we already Have One) but i don’t know how to get the seeds from this tree.

Most dogwoods produce fruit, but some do not produce fruit until they are 8-10 Years Old.

and there are many kinds of dogwood. some like water and some are harmed by too much water. some need shade and some just tolerate it. Some can stand hard freezes Better Than others…<

^^but the seeds will be where the flowers were.

if you do find seeds, then plant them in a cold frame and they should sprout the next spring.

and like the above posters, mentioned, dogwoods can be grown by other means besides seeds;

-taking cuttings; this means to use soft wood and make it take root. You Can cut it off the plant and help it root, or you can make it root while it is on the plant by either wrapping a rooting medium around the branch or by touching the branch to the ground and covering it with rooting medium there<

-suckers; sometimes these grow at the base of the mother plant and they can be dug up and transplanted.

How do I care for my Japanese Maple since the hard freeze this March?

My Japanese Maple is about six feet tall and suffered from the March freeze. It has many small, twiggy, tips of branches that appear dead. I have snapped a few to see if they have any green in them and they appear twig-like and snap. Can I prune these off now, or do I wait to see if the tree improves? The lower part of the tree is showing new life, but the upper branches just have dead leaves. Any suggestions on how to best care for my tree? P.S. I have been feeding it Miracle Grow once a week.

Slow down on the fertilizer. You should never feed a sick plant.Just water it once a week or more often an keep it moist. Its already had a shock so don’t do any pruning or you may shock it to death. If it gets new growth it will push off the dead stuff on its on.Be patient it may not spring right back to health.Once it has come back to health you may see some stubborn dead branches or leaves still holding on.You Can trim them then.

Tree Seeds

About tree seeds & bonsai seeds germination _instructions

It is important to maintain the freshness of the seeds in order to facilitate proper germination. This is why we store all of our seeds in a refrigerator dedicated for this purpose. Therefore, in order to preserve their freshness until you are ready to begin the germination process, You Can store the purchased seeds in the plastic bag we have provided. You can place the seeds in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator.

About Germination Instructions

Once you are ready to germinate your seeds, you have two (2) germination methods: natural germination or forced germination.

Natural germination: Sow seeds outside in autumn. Overwintering the seeds will accomplish all the necessary natural processes seeds require to germinate. Next spring, you should have sprouted seeds.

With forced germination, you are accomplishing the germination process artificially. Therefore, you will need to follow the steps listed below. Each seed is different. However most of them require three (3) steps. Some may require more while others may require less. These steps are: the scarification, the stratification and sowing.

1 – Scarification

Each seed has a shell around the live inner part. Some are harder than others. The goal of the scarification process is to soften the shell and allow water to reach the inner part of the seed. You will scarify the seeds by placing them in water, usually a glass or a bowl, for a period of twenty four (24) to forty eight (48) hours. The norm appears to be the use of warm water. Some seeds require boiling water while others require water at room temperature. Normally, the viable seeds will drown after the twenty four (24) hour period while others will float on top. If there are still seeds floating after the forty eight (48) hour period, you can discard them as they are empty seeds. Once completed, you are ready to begin the next step (please note that some seeds require you to proceed directly to the third step).

2 – Cold Stratification

The next step is the cold stratification period. This step is where all the magic of nature occurs. In nature, most of the seeds fall from the trees in autumn. Consequently, seeds spend the winter period under colder temperature permitting the chemical in the seeds to develop and trigger the germination process once the ideal temperature is reached in spring. In the forced germination process, you attempt to recreate the winter period. In order to accomplish this process, use the following materials:

Plastic Ziplock bag
Paper towel
Water

Fold the paper towel in two and moisten with water. It should not be dripping wet but humid. Place your seeds on the humid paper towel and fold it over the seeds. Place the paper towel with the seeds in the ziplock plastic bag and store them in your refrigerator for a period varying from thirty (30) to one hundred and twenty (120) days. We suggest that you check your seeds every thirty-(30) days in order to prevent rot and allow for proper air circulation. You will also check for germinated seeds. If this is the case, take the germinated seeds and proceed to the next step. If not, wait the required period and then proceed to the next step.

3 – Sowing

Sowing can be accomplished in the ground or in a pot. You can use any soil suitable for planting and growing. Make a small opening in the soil (approximately half (1/2) an inch deep), place the seed in the opening and cover it with a few millimetres of soil. Keep the soil moist.

Extra steps for certain species

If you choose to germinate your seeds via the forced germination process, you may be required to follow this extra step. This step takes place prior to the cold stratification. All you have to do is expose the seeds to ambient room temperature for thirty (30) to ninety (90) days. This is called heat stratification and is accomplished by leaving the seeds exposed in a plate on your desk. After you have achieved this step, you resume with cold stratification.

I have coniferous tree seeds and a peet pellot. where do i plant the pellot in the container? at the bottom?

or do I plant it 1/8th of an inch from the top where I’m supposed to plant the seeds?

Plant it at the top of the container. Whenever you repot a tree, the soil line remains the same. Do not bury the trunk in the soil, the roots will go down into the new container as they grow.

Japanese Maple

Classification And Naming Of Acer Palmatum (Japanese Maples)

Taxonomy and Nomenclature: A.K.A. Classification and Naming of Acer palmatum (Japanese maples).

At first the Latin names used in horticulture can seem to be a bit off putting and hard to remember. Don’t worry! After a bit of practice the names will come more easily to you! Honestly!

‘Acer’ (pronounced Ay-Sir) is the Genus of plants known commonly as maples. Of all the maple species, the Japanese maple (known by its botanical name as Acer palmatum\)
is the most variable. It is this variability that we enjoy so much in these much admired trees.

There are three basic sub-species of Acer palmatum. These are: amoenum, matsumurae and palmatum. The word ‘palmatum’ (pronounced PAL-MATE-UM) comes from the root word PALMATE or palm-like, meaning the leaf looks like the palm of your hand with fingers.

Unnamed red leaved maples sometimes have the generic name Acer palmatum atropurpureum. ‘Atropurpureum’ refers to the red leaf form. Split leaf or cut leaf Japanese maples are referred to as: Acer palmatum dissectum or Acer palmatum dissectum atropurpureum for the red cutleaf form. Dissectum (pronounced DIE-SECK-TUM) simply describes the leaves as being dissected or split (cut) into a fine filigree form.

Naming of particular Japanese maple tree cultivars (cultivar = a distinctive plant maintained by cultivation) follows the rules of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants. Cultivar names should always be written in roman type with single ‘quote’ marks after the species name. For example: Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ or Acer palmatum dissectum atropurpureum ‘Crimson queen’.

When you are looking to buy an Acer palmatum (Japanese maple) tree you will need to answer the following questions:

1. What color leaf do you want? Red, green or variegated?
2. What sort of leaf shape would you like? Regular 5-, 7- or 9-pointed leaf or the cutleaf type?
3. How high do you want to tree to grow? Less than 6 feet tall? 6 to 12 feet tall? Over 12 feet tall?
4. Is the tree going to be planted in full sun, partial sun or mainly in the shade?

From the answer to these questions we can progressively do a “Sherlock Holmes” investigation and eliminate particular named cultivars that do not fit the criteria selected.

For the rest of us, just plain old Japanese maple tree will do!

Examples of popular green leaf Japanese maples cultvars are:

Oskazuki, Sango kaku, Shishigashira.

Examples of popular red leaf Japanese maples cultvars are:

Bloodgood, Bonfire, Red emperor and Shaina.

Examples of popular green cutleaf Japanese maples cultvars are:

Viridis and Waterfall.

Examples of popular red cutleaf Japanese maples cultivars are:

Crimson queen, Garnet, Inaba shidare, Orangeola and Red Dragon.

Why has my red japanese maple turned green?

My crimson queen japanese maple has tuned from red to green,it is planted in a north facing garden so cant really be moved. Will it turn back to red in the autumn?

I Have One of those too. They will turn green if they get too much sun, they start dark red in the spring, get green in the sun, then get red in the fall.

Interesting site about this type of maple at the link.

There are many reasons to plant a eucalyptus–to begin with, they help to contr…

Tree Seeds
Why can’t I grow an avocado tree with seeds from store-bought avocados?

I was going to start an avocado-tree field, so I bought 200 lbs of avocados, took the seeds out, and planted them, but it’s been over 27 days now…nothing has sprouted???

when I eat an avocado , I throw the seed out the back door, there are many little avocado trees coming up. Avocado seeds need light to germinate, and they take several years to produce. They also need a male and a female to make avocadoes. You Need to do more research, and keep your day job !
